Bathing hotspots to cool you down

Our top 5 places for a dip with a difference this summer

As the sun comes out and the weather gets ever hotter, we all start to crave somewhere to go for a bathe. Whether it’s a dip in a tranquil pool or a frolic in the waves, there’s nothing more refreshing than a swim in summer. However, some of the better known bathing spots can get very crowded. Instead of  joining the crowds on famous beaches, head to secluded, stunningly beautiful or little-known local spots to enjoy a rather more special summertime swim. Here is our pick of the top alternative places to enjoy a refreshing dip this summer.

Marseille, Calanque de Morgiou
Just south of Marseille, the coastline features a series of calanques. These dramatic rocky creeks or coves offer a truly spectacular setting for a dip in the turquoise waters of the Mediterranean. A short drive from your hotel in Marseille, the Calanque de Morgiou is one of the prettiest of the calanques. It is home to a tiny fishing village. Hike down among the white rocks towards the water in this protected national park. After your swim you can have a drink at the Bar Nautic behind the harbour.

Berlin, Badeschiff
If you’re staying at a Golden Tulip hotel in Berlin this summer, on a hot day there’s nothing more pleasant than splashing about at the Badeschiff, on the river Spree. You won’t be swimming in river water; it’s actually a floating fresh water swimming pool on the river. There’s a beach bar, children’s play areas and plenty of sunbathing space around the azure blue pool housed on a converted barge. This swimming spot in Berlin is a favourite among locals looking to cool off and work on their tans in summertime.

Abu Dhabi, Wadi Adventure Park
Not far from Abu Dhabi, the Wadi Adventure Park in the garden city of Al Ain is an unusual phenomenon. It’s an entirely man-made adventure park featuring a range of water sports, including rafting, kayaking, surfing and cable wakeboarding. This is a really fun way to cool off during your stay in the United Arab Emirates. The kids will love it! But there are also plenty of tranquil areas to relax, swim and just enjoy being beside the water.

São Luís, Brazil, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park
Possibly one of the most beautiful and dramatic landscapes in the world, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is worth the 4 hour drive from your hotel in São Luís, Brazil. A stunningly empty landscape of undulating white sand dunes, during May, June and August, this unrelenting desert is punctuated by a series of astonishingly bright turquoise lakes. A little-known site of exceptional beauty that should be on everyone’s bucket list, Lençóis Maranhenses National Park is truly a natural wonder not far from São Luís in Brazil.

The Gili Islands
For a truly paradise island break, head to the Gili Islands in Indonesia for a tropical holiday. There’s great diving and beautiful scenery in bucket loads, but each island has its own unique character. Trawagan boasts a great bar scene and a fun atmosphere throughout. However, it’s the wild beauty of Meno that will attract those seeking a truly peaceful, desert island, with crystal clear waters and shady palm trees. Stay at a Golden Tulip hotel near the Gili Islands and experience this tropical paradise for yourself.
