TRAVEL GUIDE
What to do in Vitória ?
A visit to Vitória is first and foremost a trip through History, back to the time of the first settlers, when you explore the Palácio Anchieta, on your way into the Cidade Alta. Now home to the government of the State of Espírito Santo, the sixteenth-century building also houses a cultural space, where an interesting collection of antique furniture and works of art is exhibited. Nearby, you’ll discover Vitória’s unmissable attractions: the MUCANE (Museu Capixaba do Negro), Moscoso park, and São Gonçalo church, a listed Brazilian Heritage Site. Just a short walk from here is the coastline with its fishermen’s quarters, such as Ilha das Caieiras, and lovely beaches such as Praia da Direita. Departing from our hotel near the Terceira Ponte, a bridge just under two miles long, you can easily cross the bay to reach Vila Velha, one of Brazil’s oldest towns. Once there, you can admire Penha convent, São Francisco port, the Homero Massena museum, or Casa da Memória.

The best of capixaba cuisine
The Golden Tulip restaurant at our hotel in Vitória puts capixaba cuisine, another name for the cooking of the State of Espirito Santo, in the spotlight. As early as breakfast time, you’ll be able to sample some regional delicacies, such as Montanhas do Espírito Santo coffee, a mild and fruity arabica coffee harvested in the Domingos Martins area. At lunch or dinner time, in keeping with local traditions, be sure to try moqueca capixaba. This is a signature dish of Vitória, prepared with fish and shrimp steamed in a tomato sauce flavored with onion, garlic and coriander. This typical dish is usually served in a panela de barro, an artesian earthenware plate inherited from tupi-guarani Indians and listed as part of Brazil’s immaterial heritage. Another unmissable gourmet experience, casquinha de siri is a plate of roasted crab fondant with crunchy farofa (fried cassava flour).
