« Pleasant, clean hotel in good location »

Definitely a must when staying in Stonetown. My room was spacious and very clean with all amenities required. I have a nice view overlooking the pool area which was fantastic. Breakfast was good, selection of bread, fruit, omelette and other hot food. I also ate on the rooftop restaurant one night, I had pizza and no maybe just lacks some atmosphere up there. The hotel staff helped with a guide for the day who stayed with me all day and brought me to a nice cocktail rooftop bar for sunset. Hotel is directly opposite ferry terminal so very convenient for those arriving via that mode of transport. I had booked a taxi transfer from the airport, arrived at 5am and was delighted when the staff had a room ready for me this early. Staff at the front desk helped with all needs and were very friendly, I just wish I had more time to enjoy the pool area which was super clean and fresh (I only stayed for one night) Mercurys restaurant is a one minute walk away which has great food and fantastic atmosphere and lovely view of the ocean. I would definitely stay here if or when I am in Stonetown again.

« Pleasant hotel at seafront »

The Golden tulip boutique is a nice hotel with a pleasant pool and kind staff. The hotel is close to Forodhani park and many nice restaurants. We had the Executive room with spa bath and Deluxe room, of which the executive was very large. The spa bath was not that exciting (small bubble bath) and had the disadvantage of not having a good shower. Breakfast was on the rooftop and was good on first day and average on the second. The view from the room and rooftop is at the harbor with large containership being loaded in front of your window. This sounds disturbing but was actually nice as a scenery for a harbor town.

« A Winning Choice »

We did quite a bit of moving around while vacationing, spending our first night in Zanzibar at this hotel. On arriving, we were welcomed at the reception desk by about 3 or 4 young men. It was about 14:00. Okay... let me start at the beginning. The hotel is conveniently located opposite the dock in Stone town, a few meters walk if you arrive by ferry. The nightly 6:30 pm Street Food market you might have heard of is just 5 minutes walk away. Access to the vibrant heart of Stone town is at your door steps. Arriving here after our Safari accommodations sort of jolted us back to the pleasures of being in a fine hotel. This was a fine hotel. If you read my other reviews on our trip to Tanzania/Zanzibar, you'll remember I stated we left home with one motto; NO EXPECTATIONS. This hotel exceeded any we would have had. Staff, at the winning first impression lobby were professional, efficient and extremely welcoming. They win my highest praise. The elevator was a bit uncooperative, but then again, you never get a chance to carry any luggage yourself, so using the stairs wasn't an inconvenience. Remarkably, arriving in our rooms only raise the bar yet another level. Both rooms ( one for the boys and one for us,) were bright, and strikingly classy with beautifully tiled floors, cold air conditions, and working refrigerators! The ideal combination for tempering the heat. Next stop would be to investigate the toilets and showers. What a relief it was to finally have powerful showers with warm water. Points were lost for mouldy grouting and bad run offs in the showers due to careless craftsmanship. Having not eaten since breakfast, we decided to do lunch immediately at the hotel's restaurant situated on the rooftop terrace, where the view over the Town was just breathtaking. A much needed gentle breeze fanned the entire sitting area from the ocean. The cuisine here would set the standard for the rest of our stay in Zanzibar. IT WAS EXQUISITE! This is one of those restaurants you'll have to try in order to understand. The prices were non-exorbitant and the service kept the same high standard we received at check-in . Did I say the food was incredible? I usually like to insert a note on flies and mosquitoes, after all it is the tropics. We absolutely had no problems with either at anytime of the day. Remember though, it is still good practice to take the necessary precautions. Statics on malaria here can vary depending on the source. Visit small villages to meet the locals and you might be surprise at their thoughts on the subject. The hotel is a top choice for any length of stay in Zanzibar. Definitely 4-stars in my book. If you're looking for something more on the quiet side, then this will be a poor choice. Stone town never really seems to sleep; but with superb food, a skilled staff, and an unbeatable location, Golden Tulip should meet all your other expectations. They met all of mine...if I had any. The positives; • Skilled and helpful staff • Excellent location • Incredible cuisine • Well situated restaurant • Work AC • Working Refrigerators • Good WiFi • Powerful showers • Nice rooms The negatives; • Sloppy craftsmanship in showers • Dirty grouting
